Meet Anne K. Mulligan from Flotsam & Whimsy

♥ Please tell us about yourself:
I have been an art director for print for over 30 years, but have always loved the decorative arts, especially jewelry. When I was downsized from a corporate job, it freed me up to explore other areas of creativity. I taught myself wire-wrapping with the help of a youtube video and have been making jewelry ever since and just recently taught a class in the craft and branched out into home decor. I love working with found materials, especially anything that's washed up on the beach, which is where my company name comes from. The term "flotsam & jetsam" refers to materials that are either naturally occurring or thrown overboard by the crews of ships. My imagination adds the "whimsy." I continue to freelance in graphic design, but dream of the day when I can make and sell my handiwork full time.

Found materials! I love being able to take a broken bottle, run the pieces through a tumbler to create gems of color and turning them into wearable art.

♥ What do you love most about your business?
Making beautiful things that you can hold in your hand. After 30 years doing graphic design, I decided that I had been selling air for long enough and I wanted to actually make something tangible that I could be proud of. It took me a while to settle on what I wanted to make, but once I made my first pendants, one thing led to another and soon I was wire-wrapping everything I could get my hands on.

As a new site, Craft Café has the chance to see what's been done, right and wrong, by the bigger sites and learn from it.

♥ What advice can you give for crafters/artisans just starting out?
Make things that make you happy.

I am a new mommy to a 7 month old little cutie named Andrew Jordan. I was put on part time by my marketing job a few years ago and that is when I decided to sell what I love and was already making just for fun - Sugar Scrubs. I love everything handmade and I enjoy craft festivals, gardening, scrapbooking, reading & traveling.

I make Sugar Sweet Sugar Scrubs in wacky scents like Wedding Cake, Fruity Pebbles, Butter Beer, Circus Freak & More! I have also added Sugar Whips, Whipped Soaps, Lotions, Body Mists, Lip Scrub and Fabric Flower hair pins to my line over the last 2 years.

Things I enjoy myself. It seems natural to sell what you love instead of not what you think others would like.

A new website with no fees, what is not to love? Also, I like the social marketing aspect. Craft Cafe seems to be involved socially which is important.

Do a lot of research! I almost quit before I started because it was hard to find "leak proof" packaging for oily sugar scrubs. Do research on pricing too. You don't want to sell yourself short. You don't have to be the cheapest out there especially if you make a quality product.

♥ Where do you see your business in 5 years?
Hopefully, Sugar Sugar Scrub will be successful enough that I won't have to work PT on the side!

ArtGlassFusion - Craft Cafe

Combining thin strips of clear and translucent apple green glass and a multi hued green swirled glass under a layer of clear glass was the first step in creating this beautiful candle shade. The candle shade is then fired again at a lower temperature and slumped over a metal half circle mold. This shade is approximately 5 1/2" in height, and will accommodate up to a 3"diameter candle. All of my candle shades come with a complimentary battery operated tea light, for when an open flame is not an option.

Botanicals - Craft Cafe

These bath bombs are molded in various shapes and you get one large molded heart that resembles lemon yellow in color. Plus you can have these scented with lemon essential oil or any other oil that I list.

Bath bombs are essentially baking soda and citric acid but some people like to add cornstarch and other skin loving goodies.

There is also a choice of witch hazel, butters or oils to slightly wet the mixture so that the bath bomb can be packed together and become a hard object. I personally found that I like to use babassu oil because just like coconut oil it is fairly solid at room temperature but starts to melt at body temperature.

Tutorial: Signing up & Signing in

So you're a shopper looking to favorite some items on Craft Cafe. In order to remember your favorites our site needs you to be registered and have an account with us. That's how our system remembers your favorites from everyone else's.

Registration is easy and free.

From any page on site, if you're not already registered you'll see the above layout - note the red highlighted "SIGNUP" links - click either one to be taken to the registration page.

This is the registration page filled in 100% with - info used for EXAMPLE ONLY.

Once you click the SUBMIT button you're registered. You just need to log in.
-unless it gives you an error-

Click SIGN IN at the top of the page and come to this screen.

If you're not getting emails from craft cafe - make sure to add (*@craftcafe.co) to your email contacts list so you get all emails delivered to your inbox.

On the login screen - simply enter your email address and password you entered during sign up and it will take you to the main craft cafe page - like so (note my account is now logged in)

Every time you log into our site, the system will log you out from any other open session you have stored somewhere. So if you're on your phone, and you log in on a pc, it will log you out of the phone session. This is done for security reasons. So that your information isn't available to people who aren't you.

Sometimes you may get an error that it can't log you in. After one try and you get an error - try clearing your browser's cache files - before trying again. If you're still having issues - or you think your account is locked - try the lost password request form on the sign in page.

The lost password request form requires your LAST name you signed up with and your email address. It will send an email to you from one of our administrative emails - again this is why it is important to add *@craftcafe.co to your address book. This ensures you receive all emails - otherwise check your spam folder.

Once you get the email from us for the password reset - you can then follow the instructions in the email - and reset your password. Admin cannot see passwords so we cannot give you your password by email. YOU MUST process a lost password request and reset it on your own.
