DIY Project: Bath Melts

Hello! This is Ashley from Aqua Blossom :) I am so excited to be writing this guest blog for Craft Cafe! I make handmade, natural bath and body products, and while it is a super fun and interesting job, I am usually pretty exhausted by the end of the day.

My favorite way to relax and unwind - especially during cooler weather - is with a nice, hot bath. I know, it sounds amazing right now! But what if I told you there was a way to make that bath even more relaxing? Oh, trust me, there is. Bath melts can turn your relaxing bath into a luxurious spa experience, and the best part is that you can make bath melts at home using just a few ingredients, and some kitchen tools that you probably already have.

First, get you'll need to gather the ingredients. I realize not everyone has a slab of cocoa butter just laying around, so I'm including links to Craft Cafe supply shops where you can buy these items.

Here's what you'll need:
Next, you'll need a few things from your kitchen: a glass measuring cup, metal pot or saucepan, spoon or bamboo skewer to stir, plastic dropper, ice cube tray or mini muffin cups to pour the melts into.

To get started, measure out your cocoa butter and sweet almond oil in the glass measuring cup. Next, you'll need to fill the pan with water and make a double boiler by setting the measuring cup in the water (but do not let any water get into the cup). TIP: if you're using a measuring cup with a handle, you can hang the cup from the side of the pan so it is suspended in the water. Allow the butter and oil to melt slowly, on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. I like to use bamboo skewers to stir, but a spoon will work just fine.

Once it has melted completely, carefully remove from heat. Now you can add a fragrance oil or essential oil. With an essential oil, you'll only need about 6-8 drops. With a fragrance oil you can use slightly more. If you are using natural cocoa butter, it is going to have a chocolatey smell that can be difficult to mask with floral scents, for example. My advice? Just go with it! Use a sweet smelling fragrance that complements the cocoa. I decided to use Hot Cocoa fragrance :) If you really dislike the natural cocoa smell, you can always use a deodorized cocoa butter.

Finally, it is time to pour into molds. You can use an ice cube tray, small soap or candy molds, or even mini muffin cups. Allow the bath melts to cool - you can pop them in the fridge to speed up the process. The first time I made bath melts, the cocoa butter took HOURS to solidify and I was left wondering what I did wrong. That is totally normal - cocoa butter can take a long time to solidify at room temperature.

Once they have cooled for a while, pop them out of the molds and store them in a container or zip bag. They should last about 6 months, but I'm sure you'll go through them much faster once you give them a try :) Just add one or two (depending on size) to a hot bath and enjoy! PLEASE be careful standing up and getting out of the bath, as they can make the tub slippery.

This is a very simple bath melt recipe - you can get creative and make it your own by experimenting with different butters like shea, mango, and kokum; different oils; and even embellishments like dried lavender buds, rose petals, or sea salt.

I've had so much fun making these and sharing my recipe with you! I hope you have fun as well, and most importantly - have a relaxing day :)

Craft Cafe Artisan Chat - Aqua Blossom

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Meet Ashley Wallis from Aqua Blossom

Please tell us about yourself:
I'm a mom to two boys, ages 2 and 3. I love natural products and started making baby bath products when my kids were babies. The more I read and learned about different ingredients and techniques, the more adventurous I got with my products. After I learned to make lip balms and body scrubs, I was encouraged by friends and family to open up a shop. Ever since then it has been wonderful! It's not just my job, but also my creative outlet  When I'm not working or developing new products, I love reading, baking, playing at the park with the kids, and watching movies with my hubby.

How long have you been in business?
Almost 2 years.

Please describe your business:
I make spa-quality products, including lip balm, body scrubs, body butter, and facial products. All of my products are 100% handmade by me - from selecting the best ingredients, to creating a perfect formula, melting, mixing, designing labels, packaging - everything is handmade from start to finish. All of my products are vegan and gluten-free, and I use natural ingredients that are safe for your skin and the environment.

Tell us what inspires you:
I get a lot of inspiration from nature and the seasons. I love making seasonal products - minty or cinnamon flavors in the winter, fresh and floral for the spring, etc. A good amount of my scents are tropical or fruity... being a Florida girl, we have summer most of the year

Please share with others, your best marketing techniques:
I have tried tons of different techniques, but I think what has worked best for me is to constantly keep in contact with customers through social media. Instead of just posting or tweeting when I have a sale going on, I post photos of what I'm working on today or of a completed custom order. Also, asking questions or seeking opinions is a good way to encourage participation through social

What do you love most about your business?
I love that it is something I created, by myself, from the ground up. It is my baby! I also love that being my own boss has enabled me to work on my own schedule. I've been able to stay home with my kids while they're little, which has been amazing. And I can get orders out at 2 am if I need to - I am a night owl

Please tell us why have chosen Craft Café as a venue for your business?
Craft Cafe is a really unique handmade community! First of all, it is very fair to all sellers, and everyone has a chance to be on the front page! From a seller standpoint, they have super easy tools to set up shop, like shipping tools and photo uploading tools. The pricing structure also cannot be beat - paying per month or per year is always a better deal than paying per transaction. Keeping my fees lower, means keeping my prices lower for customers

What advice can you give for crafters/artisans just starting out?
Do NOT give up! Getting those first few sales can be rough - I didn't make my first sale for two months. Just keep on creating and listing your items, and don't forget to promote. Also, don't sell yourself short - it is tempting to price things low to attract new customers, but if you're not making any money, how will you afford to keep creating?

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I am constantly making short and long term goals for myself! In 5 years I really would like to have my products in some local shops and boutiques, and to keep increasing and meeting my online sales goals.

Lastly, would you like to offer our readers a special or coupon code for your Craft Cafe shop?
Absolutely! You can use coupon code CAFELOVE for 20% off your purchase through March 31, 2013 in my Craft Cafe Shop.

We would like to send out a big THANK YOU to Ashley for all her love and support.

***CAFE MOCHA LIP BUTTER***
A perfect way to wake up your lips! Cafe Mocha smells just like a freshly brewed cup of coffee, with just a hint of chocolate to balance it out.

Our lip butter is vegan, gluten-free, and contains no harmful preservatives! It is handmade (not from a base!) in small batches to ensure freshness.

***BENEFICIAL INGREDIENTS***
The first ingredient in our lip balm is Shea butter. Shea is high in vitamin and mineral content, and is excellent for dry skin and chapped lips.

Kokum butter is considered to be up to 80% of stearic-oleic-stearic (SOS) triglycerides which are thought to prevent dry skin.

We use 5 different plant-based oils in our lip butter: sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, coconut, and soybean. These light oils absorb quickly into the skin to moisturize lips without feeling heavy or greasy.
